Lucy Avila-Herrera, 64, of Hiawatha Kansas, died at her home surrounded by family, on August 16, 2014.

She was born October 11, 1949 in Cameron, Texas to Juanita Borgas Herrera and Manuel Herrera. She was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Hiawatha. She worked as a cook for many years at the Hiawatha Country Club and Maple Leaf Restaurant until leaving to help raise her nieces and nephews and care for her mother. Lucy helped raise and care for her nieces and nephews until she became ill many years ago. She never missed an opportunity to attend their football games, wrestling matches, band concerts, school plays and any school or church activity they were involved in. Lucy was a great influence and would do anything for her loved ones as she took great pride in caring for her family.

She is survived by her sister-in-law Mary Herrera of Hiawatha; nephews Ernest Herrera of Hiawatha, Manuel (Cheri) Herrera of Independence, MO, CastruloTrevino Jr., Lupio Trevino and Theodore Trevino all of Houston TX; nieces Virginia Herrera of Topeka, Tina (Phillip) Herrera-Harmon of Topeka, Keri (Michael) Woods of Savannah, MO; sister Lupe (Castrulo) Trevino of Houston, TX; great-nieces Juanita “Cori” Herrera of Topeka, Bailey Woods of Savannah, MO; great-nephews Joshua Herrera of Blue Springs, MO and Ethan Wilke of Savannah, MO.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Ralph Herrera, and niece Mary-Helen Trevino.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home after 10 a.m. until 7 Friday evening. The family will meet with friends at the funeral home from 1 until 2:30 Saturday, to go in procession to Mt. Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha, for graveside services and burial. Father Dan Gardner will officiate.
