Bernice Veach

Bernice L. Veach, 96, of rural Leona, died Sunday evening, February 1, 2015, at Highland Health and Rehabilitation Center in Highland.
Bernice was born across the road of her present day home, north of Leona, June 3, 1919, one of four children born to John and Elizabeth “Lizzie” McCauley Ukena and was a lifelong of ‘that’ corner.  She attended Bellevue Country School prior to graduating from Leona High School with the class of 1937.  She later attended Highland Community Junior College for two years.  Bernice worked at the bank in Leona a few years before deciding she needed to be a ‘stay at home Mom’ and take care and assist her husband.
Mrs. Veach was a lifelong and dedicated member of Bellevue United Methodist Church of Leona; where through the years, she served as the communion steward.  She also was a member of the United Methodist Women of the Church; and the Bellevue Community Club.
She married Paul Veach, January 25, 1946, at her parents’ home.  They farmed and raised livestock until his death September of 1990.  She continued to live north of Leona and shared her home with a son Bobby, until moved to the nursing center about four years ago.
Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, a sister Edith Carter, and a brother Lawrence in infancy.
Survivors include two sons:  John (Judy ) Veach of rural Robinson, Robert Veach of rural Leona; a sister Helen Ruch of Highland;  three grandchildren:  John Veach, Jeff Veach, Jamie Windmeyer; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
A celebration of Bernice’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday, February 5, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland, with Pastor Jerry Petering officiating.  Interment will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Leona.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon until 6 Wednesday.  The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services Thursday.
