Valley Falls- Bertha Lina Cook Hamon, 106, passed away Friday, February 6, 2015 at Linwood Park in Valley Falls.

She was born October 9, 1908 in the Prairie View Community, south of Effingham, the daughter of Edwin Cook and Ida Thompson Cook.

Bertha attended Emporia State Teachers College and Kansas State University. She worked as a social worker in Jefferson County. Bertha was a member of Literary Ramblers, Delaware Valley Quilters and was very active in Sunflower Extension Unit. She was also a member of the Coal Creek and Valley Falls United Methodist Churches and numerous other community and church organizations.

On May 12, 1934 Bertha married John Hamon at the home of her parents in Effingham. John preceded her in death on October 12, 2007. She is survived by: her daughter Marjorie Warta (Byron) of Newton, her son Charles Hamon (Mary Jo) of Valley Falls, and her daughter Nancy Jo Fasse (Harvey) of Effingham; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Orlena Hall, and a brother, Clarence Cook.

A service to celebrate Bertha’s life will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 9th, 2015 at Valley Falls United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Valley Falls Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 10-11:00 a.m. Monday morning in the church fellowship hall. Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice or Valley Falls United Methodist Church and may be sent in care of Mercer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 6, Valley Falls, KS 66088.
