Gordon Hackathorn

Gordon Lee Hackathorn, 82, of Holton, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2015 at Holton Community Hospital.

He was born September 26, 1932 in Wyandotte County, Kansas the son of Giles Reginald and Alma Udell (Bingglie) Hackathorn.  He graduated from Oskaloosa High School and was a member of the Oskaloosa and Valley Falls communities until 1956 when he moved to Holton.  Gordon proudly served his country with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

Gordon was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Holton.  He had owned and operated Sinclair gas station, owned a shoe repair shop, worked as a lineman and later for the street crew for the City of Holton from which he retired.  In his later years Gordon worked at Country Mart in Holton.  He was also a volunteer fireman, was a member of the Holton VFW Post 1367 and a member of the Eagles Club.

On February 22, 1953 he married Betty Lavon Burk in Valley Falls. She preceded him in death on July 20, 1985.  He later married Carol Elizabeth Craft Mayfield on August 13, 1988 in Holton.  She also preceded him in death on February 8, 2005.

He is survived by: his daughters, Pamala K. Buser (Gary) of Lincoln, NE and Candy S. Wiser of Bedford, TX; his two step daughters, Patty Murphy (Mike) of Alma, MO and Angie B. Webster (Harvey) of Holton, KS; his step son, Douglas W. Mayfield (Karla) of Smithville, MO; his brothers, Grant Hackathorn, of Kansas City, MO, Marvin “Bub” Hackathorn, Norman Hackathorn and Larry “Pete” Hackathorn all of Kansas City, KS; and his 20 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. In addition to his wives, Gordon was also preceded in death by his son Reginald “Reggie” Hackathorn on December 9, 2000.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.  Burial with full military honors will follow in Holton Cemetery.  The family will greet friends Friday evening from 7-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  Memorials are suggested to City of Holton Parks and Recreation Department and may be left in care of Mercer Funeral Home, P.O.
