Mary Margaret Gilbert, 79, Cummings, Kansas, died Tuesday, April 07, 2015, at Mosaic Life Care in St. Joseph, Missouri.

Mass of Christian burial will be Monday, April 13, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Leo’s Church, Horton, Kansas.  Interment will follow in St. Leo’s Cemetery.  A parish rosary will be recited on Monday, April 13th at 9:30 A.M. at St. Leo’s Church.  Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Leo’s Cemetery and may be left in care of the Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, Atchison, Kansas with whom the final arrangements have been entrusted.  Online condolences may be left at www.arensbergpruett.com.

Mary was born October 5, 1935, in Horton, Kansas, the daughter of LeRoy and Ruth Richling Brook. She attended elementary school in numerous cities, Willis High School and graduated from Powhattan High School.

She and Freddy Gilbert were united in marriage on May 30, 1953, at St. Augustine Church in Fidelity, Kansas. Mr. Gilbert preceded her in death on December 7, 2014.

Mary was employed for thirteen years as a cashier for Sac “N” Fox Casino until retiring in 2013.  She formerly worked at Bank of Horton, Atchison Leather Products, Northeast Kansas Community Action Program and Horton Garment Company.

Mary was a member of St. Benedict Parish, Atchison and a former member of St. Leo’s Church in Horton. She served many roles in the church, as a lector, Eucharistic minister, choir member and attended Perpetual Adoration. For many years she crocheted an afghan and donated it the church to be used as a fundraiser for annual church dinners.

Mary was a seamstress for her family and enjoyed crocheting for her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She tended her flowers in her garden.

Survivors include three sons, John A. “Tony” Gilbert, Del City, OK, Timothy L. Gilbert, Carbondale, KS, Andrew S. Gilbert, St. Joseph, MO, three daughters, Katherine R. “Kathy” Coffman, Cummings, KS, Lynn M. Rodvelt, Hiawatha, KS, Judith A. Palmateer, Everest, KS, three brothers, Kenneth E. “Gene” Brook, Kingman, AZ, Frank J. Brook, Independence, KS, Joseph A. Brook, Roseville, CA, three sisters, Elizabeth A. “Betty” Thieme, Topeka, KS, Elaine M. Allen, Horton, KS, Doris E. Gibson, Highland, KS, fourteen grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren and five step-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Ivan, George, Charles and Lawrence Brook, a sister, Helen Joyce Dean, a grandson, Brandon Lee Gilbert and a great grandson, Riley Lee VanFleck.
