Pansie J. Chandler, 89, of Hiawatha, died Thursday morning, April 9, 2015, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Hiawatha.


She was born near Bern in Nemaha County, June 13, 1925, one of three children born to Aaron and Grace Dexter Brunner. Pansie attended country school near Sabetha prior to graduating from Sabetha High School in 1943. During World War II, she was enrolled in Cadet Nurses Training at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Sabetha, prior to finishing the training at a St. Joseph, Missouri hospital. Pansie worked as a registered nurse at Hiawatha Community Hospital for 27 years, before retiring in 1991, at the age of 65.

Pansie was raised in the Community of Christ Church. After she retired, she enjoyed traveling: included the Grand Canyon, an Alaska cruise, New York and Hawaii.

She married Eugene Chandler, February 8, 1947, at Sabetha. He died May 12, 1968.

Survivors include her children: Gary (Linda) Chandler of Topeka, Carolyn (Don) Hilgenfeld of Lincoln, Nebr., Connie (Duane) Widman of Topeka, Stephen (Kathy) Chandler of Hiawatha, Christine Ballew of Hiawatha, Cynthia (James) Reynolds of Falls City, Neb.; a sister in law Fannie Mae Hathaway of Des Moines, IA; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren.

Pansie was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Howard and Jack Brunner.

A Celebration of Pansie’s life is planned for 10 a.m. Monday, April 13, at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center with Youth Pastor Ryan VanPeursem officiating. Interment will follow at Morrill Cemetery.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha after 12 noon Sunday where the family will meet from 6 until 8 that evening.
