Mildred and Keith Bowser

Mildred L. Bowser, 86, formerly of Whiting, died Thursday, November 26, 2020 at the Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka following a battle with COVID.

She was born June 4, 1934 at Whiting, the daughter of David and Hulda Stuff Wenger.  Mildred graduated from Whiting High School in 1952.  

Mildred worked at the Horton Clinic, the Student Loan Department at the Bank of Horton, and the Ben Franklin Store in Holton.  Mildred’s pride and joy was running Bowser Daycare, which she did for over eighteen years, and had taken care of more than one hundred children.

Keith Bowser, 87, passed away Sunday, February 28, 2021 at the Mission Village Nursing Facility in Horton.

He was born October 7, 1933 on a farm west of Mayetta, KS, the son of Roy and Ina Bostwick Bowser.  He graduated from Whiting High School in 1951.

Keith was a farmer and a stockman in the Whiting area and had operated a dairy for thirty-two years.  He also was a substitute mail carrier and had worked at Goodyear in Topeka for ten years.

Keith and Mildred were married on June 28, 1952 in the home of Mildred’s parents at Whiting.  

They were members of the Evangel United Methodist Church in Holton and former members of the Whiting United Methodist Church.  Keith was also a member of the Jackson County Farm Bureau Association.

They were preceded in death by their parents, a daughter, Linda Borders and a grandson, Jason Hochstetler.  Additionally, Keith was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Eugene Bowser, and Mildred by two sisters, Ruth Gordon and Arlene Geraldine Lively, and a brother, Marvin Lee Wenger.

Survivors include two sons, Rusty Bowser, Otis, Oregon and Jerry Bowser (Mary), Netawaka; a daughter, Bonnie Hochstetler (Steven), Horton; Mildred’s brother, Chester Wenger, Whiting; many grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

A memorial service for Keith and Mildred will be on Saturday, April 24th at 10:30 a.m. at the Whiting Community Center.  A light lunch will follow the service at the Community Center.  Private inurnment will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery at Whiting.  Memorials are suggested to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, St. Croix Hospice, or Gideons International, and may be sent in care of the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, PO Box 1034, Holton, KS  66436.  On-line condolences may be made at chapeloaksfuneralhome.com
