Armella C. Schmits,101, of Seneca died at her home, surrounded by her children, on Tuesday, April 20, 2021.

She was born on February 4, 1920 to John B. and Philomena (Koelzer) Haug, on the Koelzer farm located south of St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict, Kansas. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in St. Benedict, Kansas and graduated from high school in 1939.

Armella married Alvin Schmits on November 6, 1946 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict. The couple lived and farmed the family farm southeast of Seneca until 1951 when they moved to their farm on the north edge of Seneca where they raised their family and she lived until her death. She celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary with Alvin in 2006.

She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and St. Ann’s Altar Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvin on July 9, 2010; her son, Larry on September 21, 2019; five brothers, Lawrence, Pete, Aloysius, Ambrose and Melvin Haug; and sisters, Ursula Lueger and Clara Meyer.

She is survived by her son, Gene (Candy) Schmits of Seneca; her daughters, Jane (Doug) Smith of Lenexa, Carol Baker of Topeka, Linda (David) Stewart of Lenexa and Donna (Michael) Bacon of Lenexa; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Rosaries will be prayed at Lauer Funeral Home on Friday, April 23, 2021 at 2 & 7 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday, April 24th at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be left in Armella’s memory to Sts. Peter and Paul School, sent in care of the family.
