Norma “Jean” Dreyer Vandorn, 87, of Vliets, Kansas, peacefully passed on from this life on Tuesday morning, May 18, 2021 surrounded by family.

Visitation will be Sunday, May 23, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Padden Funeral Chapel in Frankfort. The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 24 at Salem Lutheran Church near Axtell.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Jean was born on May 5, 1934, in Jeffersonville, Indiana, daughter of Norman and Mena Dreyer of Sellersburg, Indiana. She had an older brother Bill and a younger brother, Stan, both deceased. She grew up on a dairy farm and enjoyed training Jersey cows to show at fairs. Graduating in 1952 from Silver Creek High School, she attended DePauw University, in Greencastle, Indiana, for one year, then graduated as an R.N. from Chicago Wesley Memorial Hospital in 1956.

On March 1, 1958, she married Wendell Vandorn, of Frankfort, Kansas, on March 1, 1958 at Sellersburg, Indiana. They settled into their farm in Vliets, Kansas. To this union were born Brian (Kelly) Vandorn, Johnson, VT, Kristin (Roger) Simpson, Double Oak, TX, and Eric Vandorn, deceased. Grandchildren of “Granny Jean” are Ben, Anchorage, AK, Jacob, Kaeti, and Colin Vandorn, Johnson, VT, Jonas and Harley Simpson, Double Oak, TX, and Rebecca (Travis) Werthmann, Strasburg, CO; great grandchildren are Alexus and Oliver Werthmann, Strasburg, CO, Bernie and Alice Vandorn, Gary and Eileen Johnson, and Ellen Dreyer; brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-law, cousins, nephews, nieces, great nephews, and nieces live in many states.

Jean was a very devoted wife and mother who loved unconditionally and gave freely to others. She loved her partnership with Wendell on the farm and being a homemaker. She had many good friends and enjoyed visiting, music, reading, travel and making baby quilts. She was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church (Axtell, KS) and in the Salem ELCW, and she sang in the choir for many years. She enjoyed volunteer work at the Marshall County Blood Mobile and Habitat for Humanity and enjoyed attending local High School sporting events and programs.

She was known for her smile, kindness, sincerity, caring and as a supportive encourager. She was like a mother to many. A great number of people were blessed by her dedicated life of service and now by her memory.

A memorial fund has been established to Habitat for Humanity or the Salem Lutheran Church Altar Fund. Contributions may be sent in care of Padden Funeral Chapel.
