Daniel “Danny” Joseph Shump, 71, of Seneca, died Sunday, June 20, 2021 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

Danny was born on September 6, 1949 in Seneca, the youngest son of Vollie and Emma Vondenkamp Shump. Danny grew up east of Seneca and attended Sts. Peter and Paul School, graduating in 1967. As a young man he worked along side his father and brothers on the family farm.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1969, serving in Vietnam. On January 1, 1971 he was discharged from the Army as a SP 4 at Fort Lewis, Washington. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and Army M-14 Qualification Bar. Danny returned home and went to work for his uncle Joe Vondenkamp in Longmont, Colorado at his Pontiac dealership for a few years, before returning to Seneca. He was employed by his brother at the Shump Body shop before he went to work at Honeyman Ford Dealership, working on cars and trucks. He worked for Honeyman Ford until he retired.

Danny loved to feed and watch the birds, to go fishing when he had an opportunity and all things cars. Danny was a member of the Earl W. Taylor Post #21 of The American Legion in Seneca.

Danny is survived by his siblings, Gary (Judy) Shump of Seneca, Harold (Carolyn) Shump of Seneca, James (Diane) Shump of Seneca and Darlene Kuhlman of Seneca; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 9AM on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials will be designated for St. Jude’s Hospital.
