Harold F. Twombly, 94, longtime resident of Highland, passed away with family by his side December 20, 2021, at home.

A celebration of Harold’s life is planned for 2:30 p.m. Thursday, December 23, at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland.  Mark Twombly and Lil Twombly will officiate.  Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesday and after 10 a.m. Thursday.  The family will meet with friends one hour prior to services. Masks are requested but optional.

Harold was born at home near Sparks, April 25, 1927, one of seven children born to the late Ray and Neoma Mae Long Twombly.  Harold spent most of his growing up years helping on the family farm where attended country school near Sparks and later High School where he participated in sports.  He quit school before graduating to help his Dad on the farm.  If you knew Harold at all you knew he was quite adventuresome!   Harold operated a flying field spraying business that covered quite and area.  When he married Virginia Weinberg, February 23, 1946, they operated a grocery store in St. Joseph, MO, for a few years.  Couldn’t take the farm out of Harold so they made their home at Highland where he was manager of Twombly Grain, at Highland and later at Troy for several years until it closed.  He returned to farming and raising livestock until he retired around 2008.  Even upon retirement, he was still interested in the farm, prices, yields, etc.
He was preceded in death by his wife Virginia Weinberg April 3, 2009, a son Earl December 10, 2008, and his wife Joyce Hinton Twombly February 24, 1987, parents, and siblings:  Harriet, Raymond, Neoma, James, Marjorie, and Wesley who died at birth.

Among survivors are his daughter Judy Veach (John), grandchildren:  John Veach (Eileen), Jeffrey Veach (fiance’ Monica), Jamie Windmeyer (Craig), Jeremy Twombly (Angela); great-grandchildren:  Tanner Veach (Callie), Austin Veach (fiance’ Chrissy), Ashton Veach, Dana Windmeyer, Carlie Windmeyer, Jordan Veach, Dustin Veach, Katie Twombly (finace’ Winston), Jarrod Twombly, Nikki Twombly; and great-great-grandchildren:  Kasen Veach and Kyler Veach

Harold was a lifelong member of the Community of Christ of Fanning.  Through the years, he belonged to several bowling teams.  Harold held several different chairs in BPOE #1741, Hiawatha Elks Lodge, and Moose Lodge of St. Joseph.  Harold was interested in the wellbeing of his community as he served on the Highland city council and served as mayor.
