Eleanor (Hersh) Hughes, 92, of Effingham, Kan., died Monday, Jan. 17, 2022. She was born Sept. 3, 1929, to Benjamin and Opal (Hale) Hersh in Snomac, Okla.

On June 12, 1948, Eleanor married Melvin Hughes. He preceded her in death on June 19, 1993.

Eleanor is survived by their three children, Peggy A. Meyer, Patricia K. Visocsky and Michael E. Hughes. She is also survived by two brothers Lawrence Dale Hersh of in Piper, Kan., and Dwight Hersh of Halstead, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; numerous great great grandchildren; and several great great great grandchildren.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Shirley Jones and Barbara Fisher.

She lived a full life. Eleanor stayed at home with the children until they were all in school. Then finding that she was bored at home, she went to work. She worked at Hallmark Cards in Leavenworth, Kan., when the building was still down by the river. From there Eleanor went to work for Missouri Valley Steel in Leavenworth until it closed. Then later she worked at Walmart in Bonner Springs, Kan., before leaving due to health issues.

Eleanor enjoyed planting, taking care of her flowers and bird watching. Someone or something (her dogs) would always bring her an orphaned bunny or bird that she would hand feed, then take back out into the wild to set free. She liked to camp and collect rocks. Eleanor loved to gravel-travel. There wasn't a gravel or old dirt road that she didn't want to travel down. She would watch the side of the road in case she saw a rocky area to stop at and collect a few more rocks. She also liked to sew, crochet and knit. She sewed all her girl's clothes as they were growing up, she sewed for other people, and she made over 35 all hand pieced and hand sewed quilts. Eleanor also liked to do ceramics and even taught other people.

A private family graveside will be at a later date.
