Mildred Josephine Mueting, 90, Axtell, died Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Life Care in Seneca.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, February 3, at Axtell Landreth Funeral Home, Axtell.  

A vigil service will be 7 p.m., Thursday, at St. Michaels Catholic Church, Axtell.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Friday, February 4, at St. Michaels Catholic Church. Father Jim Shaughnessy will officiate.

Pallbearers are Scott Kramer, Brian Kramer, Doug Mueting, Justin Mueting, Byron Mueting, Kyle Mueting, Derek, Mueting and Stephen Mueting.

Burial will be in St. Michaels Catholic Cemetery, Axtell

Mildred Skoch-Mueting was born May 11, 1931 to Venzle  and Rose (Haefele) Skoch. Following her mother’s death, she spent her childhood years with her Aunt and Uncle, John and Margaret Engelken and was later adopted as their daughter.

She first attended Saint Michael’s Elementary School, then later Baileyville Elementary and Baileyville High School, graduating in 1949. She rounded out her education when she graduated from Mount Saint Scholastica College in 1953. Upon graduation Mildred became a teacher in Germantown, Missouri and proudly became certified in both Missouri and Kansas. This led to her serving as a substitute teacher in Marshall and Nemaha County schools for 40 years.

Mildred and Hubert Mueting were married on June 13, 1953. Together they spent two years living in Kansas City, Kansas where Mildred worked as an auditor for Hallmark Cards, before moving to a farm north-east of Axtell in 1955- where they later raised their 4 children.

Throughout her life, Mildred spent much of her time in service to her family and others. She served as a member of the RCIS, Farmers Crop Insurance Alliance and an insurance agent for Cimarron and Blakeley Crop Insurance companies. Mildred was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic church in Axtell- serving as a Ladies Guild Officer, religious teacher and lay minister.

In 1999 Mildred fought and won a difficult battle with colon cancer. Her experience moved her to found the group known as Cancer Survivors of Axtell- where she worked in connection with the Relay for Life and American Cancer Society to bring support to those in the community facing their own illnesses.

Mildred lived a full life and could never be described as idle. She loved to travel and throughout her life she and Hubert visited 23 countries and all 50 states. Mildred loved to cook and was renowned for her kolaches. She also loved to spend her time playing the piano and crocheting- which yielded over 100 lap covers that she gifted to cancer patients or anyone who she thought needed a hug.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Hubert in 2014; sisters, Anna Marie Carrol and Thelma Key; and her brothers, Sylvester, Raymond, Robert and Paul Skoch.  She is survived by her four children and their spouses; Dale and his wife Sheila of Centralia, Duane and his wife Alison of Baileyville, Sharon and her husband Marvin Kramer of Marysville, Raymond and his wife Amy of Axtell, along with 12 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

A memorial fund is established and will be designated later.  Contributions may be sent in care of Axtell Landreth Funeral Home, Axtell, KS.
