Jeannie Bettie Homfeld
Formerly Atchison, KS

Jeannie Bettie Homfeld, age 79, died of natural causes on March 13, 2022, in Maryville, TN after years long battle with COPD.

A native of Atchison, Kansas, Jeannie was the daughter of the late John Joseph Bettie and Gladys Wright Bettie, and Sister to the late Richard Bettie. Jeannie was a graduate of Ingalls’s Junior-Senior High School lettering in band her Senior year as a four-year band member playing the trombone and serving as one of three Drum Majorettes. Jeannie’s Senior year she was a staff member to the Optimist and Co-Editor of the Trailblazer ’60 Yearbook, gradating on March 27, 1960. Jeannie received Honor Awards for Perfect Attendance for the years of 1955-56; 1956-57; 1958-59 and finally, 1959-60.

Jeannie met and then married James Alva Crum also from Atchison Kansas her senior year of high school. Jeannie gave birth to twin boys, Daniel Kevin Crum and Randall Dale Crum on December 27, 1961. Jeannie and Jim’s third son, Brian James Crum was born May 22, 1965. Jeannie then went on to work at the Exchange Bank of Atchison, KS before moving to Kansas City, MO.

Jeannie and Jim moved to Kansas City in 1974 where Jim worked at Kenworth and Jeannie worked at First National Bank, in downtown Kansas City. Jeannie continued to work at other financial institutions finally retiring from the Federal Government, Defense Finance & Accounting Services (DFAS) in September 2004. At DFAS, Jeannie earned many achievement awards at work while returning to community college to earn an Associate’s Degree in Accounting. Jennie spent her family time in Kansas City as an active member in the Jaycee’s organization where she participated as a member and a leader of that organization during the decade of the 1970’s in positions at the local and regional levels.

The family became members of Park Hill Christian Church, Platt Woods, MO, during their time in Kansas City too. Jeannie and Jim divorced in 1980. Jeannie met and married the late Donald J Brown in February 1983. The couple dwelt in St. Joseph, MO where Jeannie remained, after his passing until 2003. Jeannie then met and married the late Walter E. Homfeld. Jeannie and Walt moved to Blue Springs, MO, where they owned and managed a transportation business, which included the transport of US Mail.

Jeannie remained in Blue Springs, MO until her final relocation to Maryville, TN, where she spent the remainder of her life in the home of her son, Daniel.

Jeannie is survived by three children, Randall Crum and his wife Lien of Newport News, VA; Daniel Crum and his wife Sheila of Maryville, TN; and Brian Crum; six grandchildren, Will, Elizabeth, Adam, Heather, Jessica and Lane Albers; one great- grandchild, Isabelle.

The arrangements for Jeannie’s remembrance will be a Celebration of Life to be held on April 9, 2022, at 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., in the Hall of St Joseph’s Catholic Church, 801 Spring Garden St, Atchison, KS 66002. This announcement is an open invitation to friends of Jeannie to join the family in sharing a lunch meal while celebrating the person and life of Jeannie Homfeld.

Flowers may be sent to St Josephs Catholic Church directed to the Homfeld Celebration of life and they will be donated to the Medical Lodge of Atchison, KS upon the completion of the Celebration of Life.
