Dorothy Virginia “Dot” Woods, 87, of Mayetta, KS passed away Monday, September 12, 2022 at her home. She was born in Topeka on October 13, 1934 the daughter of George Franklin Powell and Mary Mae (Olds) Powell. 

      Dot’s family moved to north Topeka when she was 2 years old. She attended Grant grade school up to the 6th grade; at which time, the family moved to rural Lecompton.  She attended and graduated from Greenwood Valley Grade School, a one room school house.  In the fall of 1947, she entered Lecompton High School and graduated in 1952.  She went to work for Hallmark Cards in Topeka, as an inspector and later was asked to move to the office as a payroll clerk.

Dot married Ernie Woods October 24, 1953, quitting her office job to become a farm wife at Mayetta. She helped Ernie with the chickens, hay, cattle, moving machinery from field to field and all that farm life required.  They moved to Lecompton in 1956 but later returned to Mayetta in 1961. Dot was a homemaker and did home daycare for many years. Later in life, she worked at Kansas Department of Revenue for 12 seasons as a temporary in the income tax department.

In 2003, Dot & Ernie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with around 200 family & friends with a wonderful reception and dance.

Dot was baptized and joined the Central Avenue Christian Church in Lecompton around age nine. After moving to Mayetta, she attended the Mayetta Christian Church.

          She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernie on September 11, 2011;

baby brother Glenn Powell who died in 1918 during the flu epidemic; 6 brothers and their wives, Lloyd Powell (Ethel), Raymond Powell (Gene), Gerald Powell (Mary), Dale Powell (June), Jack Powell (Marylynn) and her sister and her husband, Marge Morris (Ralph).

Survivors include her children, Ginny Woods of Topeka, KS and Mark Woods (Debbie) of Holton, KS; 2 granddaughters, Nicole Woods & Marcey Woods; great-granddaughter, Elsie Harris; 2 special girls and their husbands, Amy Campbell (Doug) and Kristi Sherer (Kelby) and many nieces, nephews & friends.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 16, 2022 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will follow at the Brick Cemetery. Family will greet friends from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
