Wilma Jeanne Peabody Hargis, 98, of Highland, KS, passed away Monday, September 19, 2022, at Amberwell Hiawatha Hospital. She was born July 20, 1924, in St. Joseph, Missouri, the daughter of Fred William and Jessie Irene Walters Peabody.

Jeanne attended Cedar Creek Country School, Highland Grade School, and graduated from Highland High School in 1942. She attended Highland Jr. College and Kansas State University graduating in 1946 with a degree in Home Economics.

Jeanne was the 1942 Hiawatha Halloween Frolic Queen.

Jeanne married Sidney Charles Hargis on June 23, 1946, at the Baptist Church in Highland, KS, which she said was the happiest day of their lives. They celebrated 73 years of marriage together.

Jeanne taught one year of Home Economics in Manhattan, KS Jr. High School in 1946.

Sidney and Jeanne lived and farmed northwest of Highland from 1946 to 1986, at which time they retired to their home in Highland.

Jeanne was a member of the Highland Baptist Church and was pianist for many years, and the Highland Christian Church. At the Christian Church she was a member of Christian Women’s Fellowship, a Sunday school teacher, and missions committee member.

Jeanne was also a member of the Highland Progressive Club and Highland Order of Eastern Star.

Jeanne is survived by daughter Mary Lynn (Daryl) Roberts of Kansas City, MO, daughter Nancy Jeanne (Dave) Cavanah of Warrensburg, MO, and son William Sidney “Bill” (Shirley) Hargis of Highland, KS, eight grandsons: Matthew Roberts, Paul Roberts, Bradley Roberts, Joseph Roberts, Christopher Cavanah, Brett Cavanah, Joshua Hargis and Geoffrey Hargis, 15 great-grandchildren, cousin William B (Barbara) Walters, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Her memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2022, at the Highland Christian Church, with Pastor David Welch officiating. Burial will be at the Highland Cemetery.

Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland after 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Friday. Visitation with the family will be at 10 a.m. at the Church prior to the service.
