Virginia L. Nelson, 85, of Holton, formerly of Whiting, passed away on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at The Pines in Holton.

Virginia was born April 8, 1937 at Soldier, the daughter of John “Jack” and Inez Armstrong Segrist. She graduated from Circleville High School in 1955.

She was a member of the Lakeview Faith Chapel at Holton.

Virginia was a nurse in hospitals in Texas, at the State Hospital in Topeka, and at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. She was a Certified Medicine Assistant and a Certified Psycho Technician. She thrived on being a caregiver and taking care of others. In 1998 she went to work for the Golden Eagle Casino at Horton.

She married James E. “Jim” Nelson on December 17, 1965 at Circleville. He preceded her in death on September 14, 1998.

Virginia was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, J.D. Nelson, two daughters, Jackie Begesse and Pam Forrister, a grandson, George Ener, three brothers, Duane Segrist, Warren Segrist and Galen Segrist, and a sister, Regina Heckman.

Survivors include a son, Rodney Stroup (Sharon), Holton, two daughters, Rose Ener (Claud), Pasadena, TX, and Gayla Gurley (Vaughn), Gary, TX; a son-in-law, Herman Begesse, Everest; one brother, Fred Segrist (Billie), Berryton; two sisters, Donna Kay Murrow (Gene), Denison, and Mona McManigal, Lawrence; a sister-in-law, Shirley Segrist, Holton; twenty-one grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 4th at the Chapel Oak Funeral Home in Holton. Inurnment will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery at Whiting.
