Carroll Dean Young, age 85, of Santa Fe, NM, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2023 at his home. He was born September 25, 1937 in Holton, KS, the son of Melvin and Hazel Mae (Wilson) Young.

Carroll earned his GED from Holton High School in 1956. Years later he graduated from International Correspondence School, his studies included Civil Engineering and Land Surveying. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1955 -1957.

Carroll worked for the State of Kansas for 5 years, then moved to New Mexico. In 1973 he became licensed to practice Civil Engineering and Land Surveying in New Mexico. He worked for the NM Highway and Transportation Department for 31 years. The height of his career was when he was appointed by Governor Bruce King to be Cabinet Secretary of the New Mexico State Highway and Transportation Department. He retired from the department in 1994.

He married Thelma J. Brown on May 16, 1959 in Whiting, KS with whom he had their children; they later divorced. He married Corrine Gonzales on December 26, 1981 in Raton, NM; they later divorced. He married Sue J. Gonzales on May 3, 1986 in Eureka Springs, AR; they later divorced, but remained lifelong friends.

Survivors include a daughter, Janet Young of Payson, AZ; son, Randy Young and fiancé Melissa of Prescott, AZ; brother, Leonard Young of Topeka, KS; 3 grandchildren, Derek, Kevin and Sarah Young of Phoenix, Arizona; 6 nieces; numerous great nieces and nephews; as well as many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Hazel Young; a sister, Melvena Vandervort-Ingels; and a brother, Dale Young.

Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 23, 2023 at the Mercer

Funeral Home in Holton. Family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. to service time. Burial will follow at the Holton Cemetery.
