Matilda “Irene” Wood, 96, of Atchison, KS died on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Graveside services and burial will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, June 7th, 2023, at the Doniphan Cemetery, Doniphan, KS. No visitation will be held. Memorial contributions are suggested to help with final expenses and may be sent in care of the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home who is handling the arrangements. Irene was born on July 4th, 1926, in Doniphan County, Kansas, the daughter of George F. and Matilda (Scholz) Wood. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1945. She worked as a telephone operator for the former Pacific SW Bell Telephone Company (1952-1953), and then the Pacific NW Bell Telephone Company (1953-1986), retiring on July 31, 1986. She was a member of the Haller Lake Baptist Church, Seattle, WA. She moved to Atchison in 2022 from Kuna, Idaho. Irene volunteered at the Senior Center after retirement and enjoyed traveling and took two ocean cruises.

She was never married, survivors include several nieces, nephews to great, great, great nieces and nephews. Her parents, four brothers, George, Henry, Woodrow, and Everett Wood, and five sisters, Frances Wood, Mildred L. Wood, Ruth A. Jacobson, Grace L. Cash, and Anna M. Fitkin preceded her in death.
