Eleanor M. (Meyer) Hewitt

Eleanor M. (Meyer) Hewitt, 100, of Sabetha, Kansas passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.

Eleanor was the third child of five children born to Henry Lee Meyer and Maudie Frances (Williams) Meyer of rural Oneida, Kansas. She attended school at Oneida and graduated with the class of 1940.

On December 5, 1939, Eleanor eloped to Kansas City, Missouri and married her first love, Donald Ellsworth Hewitt. They made their home on a farm one-mile northeast of Oneida. In 1942, they welcomed to the world their only son, Ellsworth Joy Hewitt. Eleanor and Donald were married for 52 years before he passed away on May 22, 1992. After Donald- death, Eleanor remained on the farm for a few years before moving to Sabetha.

As a young woman, Eleanor worked as a bookkeeper at the Oneida Elevator for a short time. Then, she was appointed as a United States Postal Service employee. Eleanor worked at the Oneida and Sabetha Post Offices for 32 years until her retirement in 1987.

On April 5, 1997, she married Wilbur (Bill) G. Thompson, and they enjoyed their retirement years in Arizona and Sabetha. Bill passed away on August 28, 2011. In 2014, Eleanor moved into the Apostolic Christian Home where she resided until her death.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; her son; her two brothers, Joy and Gerald; and her two sisters, Mavis Milne and Freda Kenney.

She is survived by her four grandsons, Patrick (Vicky) Hewitt of Phillipsburg, Kansas, Michael (Melinda) Hewitt of Circleville, Kansas, Richard (Sally) Hewitt of Prosser, Washington, and Scott Hewitt of Holton, Kansas; her daughter-in-law, Sandra Hewitt of Holton, Kansas; her ten great-grandchildren, and her ten great- great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 12, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the Popkess Mortuary Chapel in Sabetha. Prior to the service, a visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the mortuary. The interment will be in the Oneida Cemetery west of Oneida.
