John William “Butch” Winters

John William “Butch” Winters, 73, of Topeka, KS, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2023. He was born August 7, 1949 in Holton, KS, the son of John and Ada Marie (Boyce) Winters.

John graduated from Holton High School in 1967, and later attended Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in Hutchison, KS, to receive his certification as a Law Enforcement Officer for the State of Kansas.

He worked for the Jackson County Sheriff- Office, Holton Police Department, and later becoming the Chief of Police, and most recently as a Correctional Officer II for Topeka Correctional Facility, where he later retired.

John married Mary Pat Askren, they later divorced. He married Laura Goodwin on February 12, 1993 in Topeka, KS.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Winters of the home; a daughter, Susan Rollins (Jeremy) of Holton, KS; 2 step-daughters, Christine Bayless (Jimmy) of Topeka, KS, and Nikki Fager (Joel) of Alma, KS; a brother, James Winters, of Soldier, KS; 3 grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren, and 5 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ada Marie; 2 sisters, Denise Streit and Karla Grau.

A Celebration of Life will begin at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2023 visitation will follow until 7:30 p.m. at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton.
