Richard “Dick” Allen Snavely

Richard “Dick” Allen Snavely, 78, of Whiting, KS passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2023 at his home. He was born May 31, 1945 in Horton, KS the son of Lee Daulph and Beulah Leona (Ohlsen) Snavely.

Dick graduated from Whiting High School in 1963. After high school, Richard enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He fought in the Vietnam War from 1965 - 1967. He was an Anti-Tank Infantry Assault Man and earned the rank of Corporal. After being Honorably Discharged form the Marine Corps on April 1, 1967, Dick remained living in Key West, Florida until 1971.

On May 29, 1971, Dick was united in marriage to Melita “Ann” Owens in Miami, Florida. They shared over 52 years of marriage.

After serving his country, Dick worked in construction on high rise buildings in Miami and Key West, Florida. After Dick and Ann got married, they moved back to Whiting, KS in 1971. He sold insurance as a District Manager for over 35 years, retiring in 2006.

Dick was a member of the American Legion Post 225 in Ozwakie, KS. Dick and Ann took much joy and spent many nights dancing at the American Legion Hall. Dick also enjoyed remodeling houses especially for his friends and family. He loved his yard work and spent most of his time gardening and landscaping.

Survivors include his wife Ann Snavely of the home; son, Richard “Ricky” Samuel Lee Snavely of Palmerston North, New Zealand; 2 sisters, Patricia Ann Snavely - Williams and Phyllis Jean Snavely both of Whiting, KS; 3 brothers, Roy Lee Snavely of Silver Lake, KS, Joseph Leonard Snavely of Holton, KS and Michael Lee Snavely of Whiting, KS; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton, KS. Burial will follow to the Springhill Cemetery in Whiting, KS with Military Honors.
