Danny R. Akin, 76, of Meriden, passed away peacefully at Midland Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born January 7, 1949, in Seneca, Kansas, the son of Lenard D. and Vivian L. (Schafer) Akin. Danny grew up in Vermillion and graduated from Frankfort High School, where he met his wife, Lorene (Longenecker). They were married on June 14, 1969, and shared 56 wonderful years together.
From 1970 to 1982, Danny owned and operated Oketo Grain Company. In 1982, he relocated his family to Meriden, where he purchased a swine operation. He then went on to manage grain and fertilizer facilities in Eudora and Topeka. After retiring, he worked full-time with H&R Block and was looking forward to celebrating his 30th year of service.
Faith and family were central to Danny's life. He was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Valley Falls, where he served as trustee and treasurer. He loved supporting his granddaughters and was saddened when his health kept him from their activities.
He is survived by his wife, Lorene; daughters Jennifer (Victor) Eubanks of Holton and Janessa (Ryan) Meckfessel of Garfield; granddaughters Jenna (Caleb) Gray of Oklahoma City, Victoria Joy Eubanks of Holton, and Kaylene and Myla Meckfessel of Garfield; siblings Janell (Robert) Wullschleger of Iowa, Joan (Dan) Buchholz of California, and Bruce (Tami) Akin of Topeka; and many dear friends and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and infant sister, Jeanne Ann.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 8th at Calvary Baptist Church, Valley Falls, at 10 a.m. with burial at Vermillion Cemetery at 2 p.m. Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 7th at Parker-Price & Davidson Funeral Home, 245 NW Independence Ave., Topeka, KS.
Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Care or Calvary Baptist Church, in care of the funeral home.
