Walter C. “Salty” Schumann, 94, formerly of Netawaka, KS passed away Friday, October 4, 2013 at the Holton Community Hospital. He was born October 8, 1918 in Netawaka the son of Max and Lena Meta (Zwonitzer) Schumann.
Walter graduated from Netawaka High School in 1937. He proudly served his country with the United States Navy during WWII aboard the LST 221. He worked for the State of Kansas Highway Department and retired in 1980. He was also a farmer and stockman. Walter was a lifelong member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Netawaka where he served as an elder and belonged to the L.L.L. He was a life-time member of the VFW Post #1367 in Holton and a member of the Wetmore American Legion.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was also loved by many nieces and nephews.
He married Edith Elizabeth Ingels on April 17, 1940 at the Lutheran Parsonage in Netawaka. She survives. Other survivors include 3 daughters, Bev Beam (Larry) of Topeka, Jan Brandt (Les) of Holton, Judy Stephens (Brad) of Holton; 3 sons, Larry Schumann (Nancy), Ron Schumann (Karen) and Jim Schumann (Pam) all of Netawaka; 14 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by 5 grandchildren, Gina E. Brandt in 1970, Jennifer L. Schumann in 1974, Jackie E. Williams in 1976, Heath J. Williams in 2003 and Lisa M. Chapman in 2013; a great grandson, Cameron D. Chapman in 2009; a sister, Erna Dieckmann Mercer; 4 brothers, Kurt, Arndt, Fritz and Harold Schumann and a son-in-law, Larry Williams.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at the Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Pastor Jeffrey Geske will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in the Netawaka Cemetery following the service. Family will greet friends from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday evening at Mercer Funeral Home.
