Laurence Christopher “Larry” Wisely

Laurence Christopher “Larry” Wisely, 90, Atchison, Kansas, died Thursday, February 2, 2012 at his home.
Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Joseph’s Church with Rev. Gerard Senecal, OSB as celebrant. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. A parish rosary will be recited on Monday, February 6th at 6:15 P.M. in the chapel of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 8:00 P.M. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Joseph’s Church or Maur Hill-Mount Academy and may be left in care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.arensbergpruett.com.
Larry was born February 28, 1921, in New York, New York, the son of Christopher and Delia Condon Wisely. He attended St. Francis Xavier Elementary graduating from St. Michaels High School. Following graduation he attended St. Benedict’s College in Atchison, Kansas, graduating in 1943.
He and the former Janis E. Kenner were united in marriage on August 21, 1943 at St. Benedict’s Church. Mrs. Wisely preceded him in death on March 17, 2008.
Larry enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 serving until his honorable discharge in 1946, serving in the European and the Pacific Theaters.
Larry began teaching in 1956 at Mount St. Scholastica Academy and Mount St. Scholastica College serving until 1962. He then served as a teacher at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, then spent a year as principal at St. Mary’s High School in St. Mary’s, Kansas, before returning to Fort Leavenworth and teaching until his retirement in 1983.
He was a member at St. Joseph’s Church and was very active as a Eucharistic minister, lector, and helping with the church bazaar. He was also a long time member of Pineview Country Club.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Skelton, Akron, CO, Sally Wisely, Albuquerque, NM, three grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.
