Walt E. Wohletz, 87, of Effingham, Kansas died Thursday, Jan. 16th, 2014 at his home where he was born.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am on Monday, Jan. 20th, 2014 at St. Ann’s Church, Effingham, KS with Fr. Benjamin Tremmell, OSB as Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Effingham. A Knights of Columbus rosary will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday, Jan 19th, 2014 at St. Ann’s Church with visitation to follow until 6:00 pm. Friends may call at the Becker Chapel, Effingham from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm on Sunday. The Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home is handling the arrangements and condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com. Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Ann’s Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Walt was born on Jan. 7, 1927 on the farm north of Effingham, the son of Edward and Lena (Hochstattler) Wohletz. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1945. Walt was a dairyman and farmed on the family farm. He also helped with funerals for Becker Dyer Stanton and O’Trimble Funeral Home for many years. He was an active member of the St. Ann’s Catholic Church, was a 4-H Leader and dairy superintendent for the Atchison County Fair for many years. Walt was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was President of the St. Ann’s Cemetery Board and helped with marking graves at the cemetery. Walt served on the Atchison County Fair Board for many years. He enjoyed mowing and taking care of this yard and homeplace.
Walt was married to Eileen Bunck on July 28, 1948 in Everest, KS. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons; Gary (Wendy) Wohletz, Little River, KS. and Dale ( Julie) Wohletz, Natchitoches, LA, a sister, Bertille Zeltner, Everest, KS, nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. His parents, a grandson, Travis Wohletz, a brother, Gerard L. “Hardy” Wohletz, a infant brother and sister preceded him in death.
