Helen Ann Marten, 89, of Wheaton, Kansas, died Saturday, April 12, 2014, at Stormont-Vail Medical Center in Topeka, as a result of a stroke. She was a life-long member of the area.
Helen was born August 23, 1924, in Cameron, Texas, the daughter of Albin and Anna Hampel Kleiber. She was baptized at St. Monica’s Church in Cameron. She moved at an early age to the Wheaton area and attended Excelsior and St. Luke Lutheran School. She was confirmed at St. Luke Lutheran South Church.
Helen married Lloyd Marten on March 25, 1943, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Duluth, Kansas. Together they worked the family farm northeast of Wheaton. Lloyd preceded her in death on December 21, 2005.
Helen was a homemaker and farmwife. She raised chickens, milked cows, and raised a large garden. She enjoyed canning and baking and was known for winning ribbons at the county fair. Helen was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wheaton.
She is survived by her children; Larry Marten (Peggy), Chandler, Arizona, Beverly Marten, Tempe, Arizona, Danny Marten, Onaga, and Brian Marten (Annette), Onaga; her seven grandchildren, Lance Marten (Robin), Reagan Guzman (Jaime), Sarah Marten, Michaela Marten, Jamie Marten, Corwin Marten and Mara Marten; grandson-in-law, Greg Tonkinson; great-grandchildren, Caden, Bailey, Malia, Drew, Paige, Liam, Brayden. Helen was also preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Griffin and granddaughter, Leigh Ann Tonkinson.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wheaton. Reverend Terry DiGiovanni will be officiating. Burial will follow in St. Luke Lutheran North Cemetery. Mrs. Marten will lie-in-state on Monday, at the Church, starting at 4:00 p.m. where the family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. They suggest memorial contributions to St. Luke Lutheran Church or St. Luke Lutheran North Cemetery, and those may be sent in care of Kufahl Funeral Home in Wheaton.
