Evelyn Young
Wherry Mortuary of Pawnee City
Pawnee City , NE

Evelyn Marie (Inglis) Young, 91 of Seneca, Kansas formerly of Pawnee City, Nebraska, passed away on Sunday, May 11, 2014 with her family by her side at the Life Care Center of Seneca. She was born on February 2, 1923 at home in the West Branch precinct, Pawnee County, Nebraska to William and Agnes (Smith) Inglis.

Evelyn attended school at Lower West Branch and Bookwalter and graduated from high school at Barneston, Nebraska in 1940. She then attended Peru State Teachers College in Peru, Nebraska and obtained her teaching degree. Evelyn then taught in several Country Public Schools in Pawnee County.

As a child she said she was a “tom boy” and liked helping her dad outside with the livestock on her favorite pony “Beauty”, instead of helping her mother in the house, learning to cook and sew. Her mother always told her that she felt sorry for Evelyn’s future husband since she had not wanted to learn these things of a housewife.

On December 26, 1945, she married John Young of Summerfield, Kansas at St. Bridget parsonage. To this union were born four sons: Larry, Ronald, Thomas and David.

For many years, Evelyn worked hard raising their sons, going to sports and other school related programs. On basketball game nights, she would have “supper to go” so that they could be fed and get to the games on time. She raised large gardens to help feed those growing boys. Later she began cooking at the Star Café and later at Pawnee Manor until her retirement in 1990. For years, Evelyn worked every election that took place and enjoyed that task.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Agnes Inglis, her husband John of 61 years and a daughter-in-law, Lucy Young.

Evelyn is survived by her sons: Larry (Angel) Young of Abilene, KS, Ronald (Debbie) Young of Wilsonville, OR, Thomas (Pam) Young of Seneca, KS, David (Barbara) Young of Olathe, KS, grandchildren, Tom (Lisa) Young, their children, Avery and Blake of Frisco, TX, Aaron (Carrie) Young, their children, Lacy Jo and Will of Seneca, KS, Mary (Ben) Shaner of Pawnee City, NE, their children, Samantha and Daren Schneider of Frankfort, KS, Dalton Shaner of Green, KS, many other relatives and friends.
