The Onaga Historical Society is hosting its annual fall open house, “Heritage Craft Day: Celebrating the 140 Years of the Incorporation of the City of Onaga”, on October 12, 2019 from 9:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the Museum grounds at 310 E. 2nd Street in Onaga. Events will include revitalizing your iron pots and skillets, Flint Hills Woodcarver Darla Steward, games of the 1890’s, among other presenters. Gwynn Hazen will have a display of Civil War artifacts as well as Ed Dillinger with his buffalo artifacts and information. A variety of crafters will be displaying their talents such as cross-stitch, wreath making, crocheting, etc.
A special presentation by Steve Suther on the techniques of winemaking will be held at 10:00 and 10:45 in the Victory Schoolhouse on the Museum grounds. Not only will he talk about the “usual” flavors of wine but will introduce the participant to such flavors as sumac, corncob, hackberry, elderflower and persimmon wine. Cecily Wabaunsee from Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation will be demonstrating how to make fry bread.
Dale Figge of Westmoreland plans to bring his corn sheller and bur grinder ran by a single cylinder engine over for the day. Participants will get to shell and grind a bit of corn. Dale will also have four other engines and a hand-powered silage grinder on display. To the delight of many, ropemaking will again be available for young and old alike, the year done by two grandsons of Jim Armstrong.
The Bonjour Brothers will provide background bluegrass music throughout the day for everyone’s enjoyment. To help raise money for the Onaga Historical Society Building Fund, caramel apples will be available for sale, a Silent Auction, large rummage sale from 8:30 to noon and an afghan drawing.
Come early, stay late and experience the heritage of the area on display at the Onaga Historical Museum, not only through the presenters but also as seen in each part of the Museum Complex. Everything will be open for this special occasion, “Heritage Craft Day”. Free admission. Concessions are not available on grounds; however, there are several options for lunch close to the Museum in Onaga.
