A jury trial is expected to conclude Wednesday in Atchison County Court for a 52 year old rural Effingham man facing 30 sex related charges.
David Smith is facing 15 counts of rape and 15 counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.
According to the County Attorney’s office, as of 4:00 yesterday afternoon, the jury was receiving final instructions before deliberation for a verdict begins.
Smith was arrested on July 26th of last year by the Atchison County Sheriff’s Department for allegedly having sexual relations with a girl that was 13 at the time of the allegations from September 2010 until July of 2011.
Smith has been in Atchison County Jail since on 250 thousand dollars bond.
Smith had four counts of human trafficking brought against him last fall where he was accused of working the alleged victim and her three brothers in an inhumane manner.
Those charges were dismissed after a November preliminary hearing did not present enough probable cause for the additional charges.
We will have updates on this trial as we receive them.
