The Hiawatha Board of Education during a special meeting this ( Tuesday ) morning voted to eliminate the district’s social worker position at the end of the current school year and re-instate a third counselor position.
Superintendent John Severin they felt that another full-time counselor would be more beneficial than the social worker position.
Severin said the board voted to transfer Tom Jones, who has served as both the elementary and middle school counselor the past 2 1/2 academic years, back to the elementary school full time beginning next school year.
Severin was given permission to advertise for a middle school counselor.
The board also gave Severin permission to hire an alternative classroom teacher, high school physical education teacher and district computer technician. Severin said they are currently in the process of screening candidates down for those three open positions and hope to begin interviews next week.
The board also accepted the retirement resignation of part-time elementary school food service worker Janet Irwin, effective at the end of the current school year.
