Construction Set for Atchison Co Courthouse Elevator
04/30/2012

It may become a little cluttered in parts of the Atchison County Courthouse in a couple of weeks as architects have set a target start date for ADA improvements.

Monday, officials set the target start date for the women’s restroom, elevator and electrical upgrade project for May 14th.

Commissioners approved the contracts to move forward with the project that requires completion of the restroom within 120 days and elevator within 240 days from that date.

Officials involved with the project told Commissioners they plan to start with the restroom so noise levels will be minimal initially.

They also plan to do a good portion of their nosier work with the elevator in the evenings.

The elevator is located on the east side of the courthouse, branched off the break room on the first floor going to the courtroom lobby on the second floor, which is below the County Attorney’s office.

Maintenance Supervisor Joe Bowen said accommodations will need to be put in place for those needing ADA access to court, which potentially means some cases may be heard in the Commissioner room in the Law Enforcement Center where ADA access is provided.

Also, Commissioners also approved a payment of 129 thousand 878 dollars for the bridge replacement south of Farmington.

It was part of a cost share of 299 thousand dollars where KDOT paid 80 percent of the cost.

The recently completed project came around two thousand dollars under budget.

Road and Bridge Supervisor Matt Dorssom reported to commissioners that a bridge on 238th Road South of U-S 59 highway was lowered from a 10 ton limit to three after a fracture critical inspection.

Dorssom also gave Commissioners a 60 thousand dollar estimate for future consideration of replacement from Husker Steel, which would make it a no weight capacity bridge.

Commissioners will not meet on Wednesday, as they will be attending the annual Count Commission Conference in Lawrence.
