Group Resetting Civil War Veteran Headstones
The Hiawatha Chapter of Post 66 American Legion Motorcycle Riders have been resetting Civil War veteran headstones that have settled over time at local cemeteries.
Members of the group said they are resetting 30 veteran headstones this year, and completed 27 stones this past Saturday at the Hiawatha Cemetery.
The group said they are respecting the soldiers who built this great country by resetting the government-issued Civil War veterans’ headstones and hope to continue this project throughout the 50-plus Brown County cemeteries as funds are available.
Brown and Doniphan Charitable Grants through Citizens State Bank and Trust provided funds to expand the original number of headstones planned for.
The Chapel Oaks Mortuary and Strube Monument Service coordinated the task.
Those with questions or concerns, or who would like to donate, are asked to call Mark Tollefson at 741-5178 or Jay Brock at 742-2212
