BC to Attend Rally for Religious Freedom
06/21/2012

The Catholic Bishops of Kansas have called for a Rally for Religious Freedom on the south steps of the state capitol building in Topeka on Friday afternoon, June 29, from 2 to 3:30 and Benedictine College will be there in force.

The school is sponsoring at least two buses to carry supporters to the event. There will be a college caravan departing from the Haverty Circle at 12 noon.

Anyone interested in riding the bus is asked to email studentaffairs@benedictine.edu to reserve a seat.

Benedictine College, the Archdiocese and the entire Catholic community across the country have been very concerned about mandates from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under the Obama Administration.

On May 30, the Alliance Defense Fund filed a formal comment with the HHS on behalf of 18 Catholic colleges, including Benedictine College.

The comment urges the Obama Administration to respect religious freedom and to rescind their direct violation of religious liberty.

The health insurance mandates would require coverage for contraception, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs, regardless of whether such coverage would violate the religious or moral conscience of an individual or institution.

By including its name in the formal comment, Benedictine College not only reaffirmed its opposition to the HHS mandates, but its commitment to Church teaching.
