The Peru State Bobcat women's golf team is looking forward to big things in the spring of 2012. Following a breakout fall season, first year head coach Brett Hahn is expecting to see the same kind of determination and improvement this upcoming spring season.
The Bobcats improved in every area of the game this fall by setting both personal and team bests. In the Nebraska-Wesleyan Fall Invite, the Bobcats shot a first-day total of 357 and a two-day total of 730. Both were record lows for the Bobcats in three years!
Senior Jordan Schaardt (Humboldt) enters the spring season as the inaugural Team Captain for the Bobcat Golf Team. During the fall, Schaardt dropped her career scoring average four strokes from an 89 to an 85. She continuously placed in the top 15 in every meet including a fourth place finish at Central Christian University's Fall Invite. It is anticipated that Schaardt will continue her improvement and contend for a few individual titles this season.
The most improved golfer coming off the fall season is junior Jacey Stoner (Alda). Stoner improved her career best 18-hole score three separate times. Her work ethic and positive attitude are the driving force behind her improvement. It is expected to see the same improvement and more career rounds out of Stoner this season.
Junior Katie Potter (Omaha) joins the team this spring after only playing a couple rounds in the fall. She played right around her career average of 93 shooting rounds of 92 and 96 respectively. Potter's competitive spirit and athletic ability will continue to serve her well this season as she continues to try to lower her scores.
The longest hitter of all of the Bobcat golfers is sophomore Courtney Musgrave (Omaha). Averaging 259 yards off the tee this fall, Musgrave definitely has an advantage over the field. She boasted a career long drive of 325 at the Nebraska Wesleyan Invite! Musgrave's long drives and refined putting stroke led her to two Top 10 finishes during the fall season (7th-Central Christian, 8th-Hastings). This spring it is anticipated that Musgrave will have more Top 10's and keep contributing for seasons to come.
Sophomore Ellen Larsen (Lincoln) was a consistent bright spot for the team. Larsen has shown great improvement in her short game that has boosted her overall confidence on the course. She dropped her scoring average four strokes and posted a career best of 91 at the UNK Invite. She is expected to keep improving this spring and to post more great finishes.
The only freshman on the squad is Elizabeth Huls (Beatrice), who will actually be considered a red-shirt freshman. Huls is a very well-rounded athlete who competed in her first golf season her senior year at Beatrice High School. During the fall season, Huls has shown great dedication and desire to improve in every aspect of the sport. It is expected she will continue this kind of improvement throughout the spring and anticipate her to make her competitive debut next year for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats will open on Friday, March 30, in a dual with the College of St. Mary at the Table Creek Golf Club in Nebraska City. Table Creek serves as the home golf course for Peru State.
The rest of the spring schedule includes:
April 1 & 2 – Nebraska Wesleyan University Spring Invite – Lincoln, Neb.
April 9 & 10 – Avila University Spring Invite – Kansas City, Mo.
April 19 – Hastings College Spring Invite – Hastings, Neb.
