L. June (Reid) Bullock, age 85, of Atchison, KS, passed away at home surrounded by her loved ones. She joined the love of her life, Joe, in the heavenly choir on January 28, 2025.
June was born on April 10, 1939, to Roy and Evelyn (Mahan) Reid in the Good Intent township, rural Atchison County, KS. She was the only daughter and the middle child between brothers Paul and David. She cherished her memories of growing up on the farm and living in the historic rock house. June attended the one-room schoolhouse at Good Intent, and by 8th grade the teacher relied on her to do many of the teacher's tasks. June attended Atchison High School where her love of singing was nurtured. After graduation she enrolled at Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, MO to pursue a teaching degree. She attended only one semester, however, before a tall handsome man changed those plans. June married that tall handsome man, William Joseph (Joe) Bullock, on February 10, 1957, at First Christian Church, Atchison, KS. They made their home in rural Bendena where they worked together on the farm and raised their family. In January 1963 they left the farm to follow Joe’s call into the ministry and thus began the succession of moves: From Ames, NE; to Rogers, AR; Columbia, SC; Lanham, KS; Ellis, KS; New Gottland, KS; Bendena, KS; and returning home in 2004 to retire in rural Atchison, KS.
While Joe attended college and seminary June worked various jobs to help support their family of seven including waitressing and working at Campbell's Soup. In later years she drove a school bus and served as school librarian for USD 223, was a typesetter for the Ellis Review, and worked as a CNA/CMA in long-term facilities in both Ellis and Lindsborg, KS. June’s greatest calling in life, however, was to proudly support her husband in his ministry to the Lord—helping with Sunday school, singing in the choir, and often holding down the fort at home while Joe was away at church conferences or traveling with his Wheels of Faith ministry.
Interwoven in a life full of love for God, family, and friends was June's love of music, singing in the choir, at weddings, or while hanging out the clothes June always had a song in her heart. She shared her love of music by singing lullabies to her children and grandchildren. If she wasn't singing, she was whistling or humming. June had a smile that lit up the room, and she had a way of making everyone instantly feel welcome.
June was predeceased by her beloved husband, Joe; her parents, Roy and Evelyn; brother, Paul; sisters-in-law and spouses, Helen and William Thurlow, and Wilma and Robert Thorne; and nephew, Gary Thorne. She is survived by her five children: Joe (Sharon) Bullock, Dea (Basil) Yanke, Shelly Stohs, Brenda Bullock, and Nancy (Chris Phipps) Bullock; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; her brother, David (Lois) Reid; numerous nieces and nephews; and family friend, Doran Bailey.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of Crittendon and St. Croix for the excellent care and loving attention that they provided to both June and Joe in the last few years of their lives.
A Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 11 am at St. John Lutheran Church, Bendena, KS, with a meal and visitation afterward. Burial will be held privately at the Moray Cemetery. Flowers and contributions may be sent to the Harman-Rohde Funeral Home, P.O. Box 426, Wathena, KS 66090.
