Paul “Mike” Michael Burns, a devoted family man and respected professional, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2026, in Lawrence, Kansas. Born on October 9, 1938, in Atchison, Kansas, to Paul and Elnor (Joyce) Burns, Mike’s life was marked by dedication, resilience, and unwavering love for his family.
Mike’s early years were shaped by his education at Maur Hill High School and his honorable service in the United States Air Force from 1959 to 1963. Following his discharge, he embarked on a distinguished career at Rockwell International, which later became Atchison Casting. Rising through the ranks, Mike ultimately became the head of Production Control, a position he held with integrity and commitment for many years until his retirement.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Mike pursued higher education after his retirement, enrolling at Benedictine College. There, he earned a degree in Business in 1994, demonstrating his lifelong dedication to learning and personal growth.
In 1971, Mike married Olive Dempsey. Their marriage spanned five decades until Olive’s passing in 2021. Together, they built a strong and loving family. Mike was the rock of the family, providing steadfast support and guidance. He was a wonderful father to his daughter, Amy Burns, and a beloved grandfather.
Perhaps Mike’s proudest accomplishment was his role as a grandfather to his grandson, Grant Brooke. Mike and Olive lovingly cared for Grant every Monday through Thursday throughout his early years, nurturing him until he was old enough to drive himself to school and activities, exemplifying the deep bond and steadfast devotion he held for his family.
Mike is survived by his daughter, Amy Burns, and her husband, Brian McGreevy; and his cherished grandson, Grant Brooke, and his wife, Hannah. His legacy is carried forward by them and all who knew him.
Paul “Mike” Michael Burns will be remembered as a man of honor, dedication, and profound love for his family. His contributions to his career, his community, and especially his family stand as a testament to a life well-lived.
