(KNZA)--The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has been awarded a nearly $73,000 federal grant.

Sheriff Tim Morse says the Sheriff’s Office was notified Wednesday by the Kansas Criminal Justice Coordinating Council and Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt that it has received the Federal Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant.   

Morse says the grant will be used for the purchase of mobile data units for patrol vehicles.  

He says mobile data units or terminals assist law enforcement in being able to have immediate access to the criminal justice system while remaining in the field.  Morse says deputies will not only be able to access criminal justice information, but will be able to complete reports eliminating the need for them to leave their assigned patrol zones.
