SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Two 65-year-old cousins charged in the shotgun slayings of two young Northern California girls are making their first court appearances. But they can't face the death penalty because it wasn't an option when the girls were killed more than 40 years ago.
Yuba County prosecutor John Vacek says William Lloyd Harbour pleaded not guilty to murder at his arraignment in California on Wednesday.
Larry Don Patterson was ordered held without bond in Oklahoma, where he was arrested Tuesday.
Patterson said he intends to waive extradition to California to face charges in the 1973 deaths of 12-year-old Valerie Janice Lane and 13-year-old Doris Karen Derryberry.
District Attorney Patrick McGrath tells The Associated Press they won't face the possibility of execution because the death penalty wasn't available in California at the time.
