(KNZA)--The Hiawatha School Board has agreed to provide more than $30,000 in additional funding to Brown County Special Education Inter-local 615 for the 2016-17 school year.
Director Becky Shamburg appeared before the Board Monday evening to request at total of $50,000 from the two districts that makeup the inter-local, with the Hiawatha school district’s share being $30,430.
Shamburg told the board they have seen a decline in carry-over funds since 2012 and saw the level really decrease after they added health insurance for paraprofessionals in 2014. She said their carry-over is below what its suppose to be and wants enough carry-over to be able to pay one month of salaries, which is around $217,000.
The board voted to provide the additional funding as requested, with the money to come from the district’s capital outlay fund.
In other business, the Board approved adding a bus route after school on a trial basis to take middle school students to the elementary school for pickup or to walk home.
Two years ago, a bus route was added to take elementary school students to the middle school after school for pick-up. Transportation Director Mary Clary said that has worked well.
