Horton Man Accused of Embezzling Tribal Funds

(KNZA)--A Horton man, who formerly served as an accounting technician for the Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas, has been indicted on a federal charge of embezzling tribal funds.

According to a news release issued by the office of Acting U.S. Attorney Tom Beall, 45-year-old Heath Hopkins is charged with one count of theft from an Indian Tribal organization.

The indictment alleges that Hopkins, while working for the Kickapoo Tribe Housing Authority, wrote unauthorized checks to himself on the tribe's checking account.

Hopkins was indicted Tuesday. That follows an investigation by the FBI.

If convicted, he faces up to five years in federal prison.
