Atchison Man Pleads to Charges in Multi-County Pursuit

(KNZA)--An Atchison man charged in connection with a multi-county pursuit in March 2015 has entered into a plea agreement.

Jackson County Attorney Shawna Miller tells MSC News that 25-year-old Ryan Brownfield pleaded no contest Friday in Jackson County District Court to charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and felony flee and elude.

Sentencing was set for October 14th.

Brownfield had originally been charged with four felony counts--including attempted second-degree murder.

Authorities say the chase began March 12th, 2015 in Atchison County after a sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a SUV that was later found to have been stolen from an Atchison vehicle dealership.

The pursuit ran from Atchison County into Jefferson County, and then into Jackson County, where a deputy attempted to use stop sticks to deflate the tires on the suspect vehicle, east of Denison, on Highway 16.

Authorities say Brownfield drove the SUV off the roadway in an attempt to run down the deputy. The deputy escaped unharmed. However, the maneuver caused the SUV to collide with a vehicle driven by a Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper.

Brownfield attempted to flee the scene, making his way back into Jefferson County, but was forced off the roadway a short time later when an Atchison County sheriff's deputy successfully deployed stop sticks. Brownfield tried to run on foot, but was taken into custody after fleeing into a nearby field.

The trooper involved in the crash was transported to the Holton Community Hospital where he was treated and released.

Brownfield remains in the Jackson County Jail, held on a $250,000 bond.
