(KNZA)--The Jackson County Commission is proposing a 2017 budget of nearly $12.5 million that calls for a nearly 3.8 mill property tax levy increase.

Commissioners say the tax levy was set in order to allow the county to continue to provide the same services through the next five years under the new state tax lid law.

Starting with the 2018 budget, counties and cities will not be allowed to raise their budgets beyond the Consumer Price Index without having a public vote.

The proposed budget contains an estimated tax rate of 77.6 mills, which is raise $8.4 million in local tax revenue.   That’s up more $730,000 over this year.

The Commission will consider adoption of the budget following a public hearing at 10:00 the morning of September 6th in the Commissioner’s room at the Jackson County Courthouse.
