Sales Tax Proposed for Local Hospital

(KMZA)---A one percent countywide sales tax is being proposed to provide financial support for Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville.

The Marysville Advocate reports representatives of CMH met with the Marshall County Commission this week to request the Commission place the sales tax proposal on the November 8th general election ballot.

The sales tax, which is proposed to sunset after 10 years, would raise an estimated $1.2 million a year.

CMH has long operated a hospital in Marysville along with clinics in Marysville, Blue Rapids and Wymore, Nebraska.

The newspaper says CMH Board Chairman Bryce Porter told the Commission the non-profit medical facility is not in dire straits, but it cannot sustain its budget much longer without new revenues.

In recent years, support from federal and state health care programs has steadily declined for all hospitals in Kansas and many are seeking new revenue sources.

Commissioners plan to decide Monday whether to place the sales tax proposal before county voters, but say they would like to hear first from the public on the issue.
