Man Faces Arraignment After False Robbery Report

(KAIR)--The second suspect charged in connection with the alleged false robbery of an Atchison retail is set for arraignment.

After an  appearance this week in the Atchison County District Court, 34-year-old Atchison resident Stephen Searcy, waived his right to a preliminary hearing. His arraignment is set for Aug. 26th.

He’s charged with conspiracy to falsely reporting a crime and felony theft after he and 32-year-old Nortonville resident Sondra Stutz reported a theft to Dollar General in Atchison May 11.

The pair claimed Stutz was opening the store when a man forced her inside the store, held her captive and robbed the store.

“This was not the robbery it was originally reported as,” said Atchison Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Searcy also faces charges in separate incidents including a theft that happened June 26th in the 200 block of North 12th Street and a July 1st theft in the 1400 block of Atchison Street.

He remains in the Atchison County Jail held on a $20,000 bond.
