Pawnee City Voters To Decide on Sales Tax Proposal

(KLZA)-- Pawnee City voters will decide the fate of a proposed half-cent sales tax during the November election.

The City and School District have agreed on language for an interlocal agreement to raise money for street repairs with an estimated price tag of $2.6-million. The agreement creates the Pawnee Interlocal Cooperative Agency.

If approved by voters, the money raised by the increased sales tax will be for street repairs only. None of the sales tax money raised by the proposed half-cent increase would be shared with the LB-840 funds which are generated by the current 1.5-percent city sales tax.

During a town hall meeting earlier this summer, those in attendance were in favor of increasing the city sales tax to pay for the project.

Stephens points out that while the Pawnee City School District will have no financial responsible for the project, their cooperation is crucial to the proposal. The City was required to have an interlocal agreement with another entity for the proposal to get to voters.

To get the proposal on the ballot in November, all the paperwork needs to be filed with the County Clerk by September 1st.
