(KNZA)--A former longtime Everest Middle School teacher convicted on theft charges will serve six days in jail as part of the terms of her probation and pay more than $1,100 restitution.

55-year-old Clare Bachman, of Humboldt, Nebraska, was sentenced last week in Brown County District Court on six counts of misdemeanor theft in connection with the theft of items while she was employed at the Hiawatha Wal-Mart.

Bachman was placed on 12-months supervised probation on the charges and ordered to serve the jail time beginning this week.   It's to be served in two, three day periods this week and next.

Bachman pleaded “ no contest” to the charges contained in an amended compliant in June.  She had originally been charged with felony theft.

Brown County Attorney Kevin Hill says the thefts occurred between August 2014 and January 2015.  He said the thefts were captioned on surveillance video and when confronted with the video evidence, Bachman confessed.

The case was investigated by the Hiawatha Police Department.

The USD 430 Board of Education accepted her resignation during a special meeting July 27th.

Bachman was a 6th grade teacher at the Everest Middle School and had been with the district 14 years.
