(MSC News)--Kansas voters went to the polls Tuesday to decide primary races for county, state and federal offices. In addition, voters in several locations also faced special questions.
In Atchison County, support was shown for the incumbents during the Republican Primary election.
That includes two contested County Commission seats.
In the 2nd district, Eric Noll defeated challenger Dan Schletzbaum 630-239.
In the 3rd district, Bill Pohl defeated his challenger, Dr. Allen Reavis, 381-300.
Pohl will face Democratic challenger Tom Mangimelli in the November General Election.
On the administrative side, the incumbent County Treasurer Shelia Bilderback lost her seat to challenging Republican Connie Ellerman with a vote of 1,040-826.
The County Clerk's seat will be filled by Michelle Phillips who defeated Joshua Wheeler 1,266-594. Long-time clerk Pauline Lee chose not to seek re-election.
The results of all races remain unofficial until canvassed by the County Commission next Tuesday, Aug. 9.
In Brown County, incumbent Sheriff John Merchant won the Republican primary, defeating challenger Danny Siebenmorgen by a vote of 1,004 to 767.
Incumbent Republican 2nd District Commissioner Keith Olsen defeated challenger Roger Madere by a vote of 330 to 257.
Dwight Kruse won the Republican primary for 3rd District County Commissioner over Roger Hinton by a vote of 264 to 191. Kruse will now face Democrat Penny Gastineau in November. The position is currently held by Warren Ploeger, who didn't seek re-election.
Voters in Horton said “yes” to a one-percent citywide retailers sales tax to fund the construction of a new municipal swimming pool by a vote of 184 to 142. The sales tax will take effect January 1st and be in effect for 20 years.
The Brown County Clerk's Office reported about a 35 percent voter turnout.
In Doniphan County, voters determined the outcome of several races, with the results of the Republican Primary Election effectively showing the future leaders of the contested seats.
That includes 2nd District Doniphan County Commission, where Thad Geiger defeated incumbent Terry Horner, 402 to 262.
In the race for 3rd District County Commission, incumbent Jerry McKernan retains the position, defeating challenger George Mitchell 274 to 108.
In the County Treasurer's race, Lindsay Etherton defeated Melissa Mott 812 to 595. The two newcomers to the race were seeking the seat currently held by Jacqueline Linck, who chose not to seek re-election.
None of the victors will face Democratic challengers in the November general election.
In Wathena, voters overwhelmingly approved a one-percent citywide sales tax for the purpose of maintaining and improving the city’s streets, water system, and sewer system. It will also be used to minimize the need for property tax increases. The sales tax will take effect January 1st and be in effect for 10 years.
Also voters in eight Doniphan County townships approved rock levies.
In Jefferson County, an upset in the race for County Attorney; a massive defeat for the challenger in the Sheriff's race, and the County Treasurer's Office remains the same.
That's the breakdown of the decision made by voters during Tuesday's Republican Primary Election.
In the race for County Attorney, incumbent Jason Belveal was defeated by challenger Josh Ney, 1,400 to 746.
Ney will face Democrat Jacob Smith during November's General Election.
In the race for Jefferson County Sheriff, incumbent Jeff Herrig handily defeated his challenger, Bronson Campbell, the current Police Chief for the City of Valley Falls. Herrig took the victory 1,891 to 285, and faces no Democratic opposition.
County Treasurer Lisa Buerman easily won re-election, defeating challenger Curt Henderson 1,826 to 343.
She faces no Democratic opposition in November's General Election.
The Jefferson County Clerk's Office reports a near 23% voter turnout for Tuesday's primary.
In Marshall County, there will be a new 2nd District county commissioner. David Baier defeated incumbent Tom Holle in the Republican primary by a vote of 248 to 200.
Lynn Feldhausen won the Republican primary for 3rd District county commissioner over Kenny Feldhausen by a vote of 244 to 149. Pat Caffrey won the Democratic primary, defeating Dennis Miller by a vote of 111 to 103. The position is currently held by Charles Loiseau who didn’t seek re-election.
For 61st District Kansas House, Frances Awerkamp won the Republican primary over Dan Brenner by a vote of 2,341 to 1,585.
Awerkamp will now face Democrat Lauren Van Wagoner in November. The seat is currently held by Becky Hutchins, who didn't seek re-election.
The district includes most of Jackson and Pottawatomie Counties.
