Services Set For Fallen Firefighter

(KAIR)--Funeral services have been set for the Hoyt volunteer firefighter killed in a traffic crash Wednesday.

Mike Schultz will be laid to rest Monday in the Mayetta Cemetery, following services at 10:30 at the Northland Christian Church in Topeka.

The Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, in Hoyt, is handling the arrangements.

Among his survivors are his wife, Mickie, his mother, and four children.

Schultz, who served as Captain of the Hoyt Rural Fire Department, was killed when the firetruck he was driving was involved in a rollover wreck Wednesday afternoon, en route to the Jackson County Fair, where he, and fellow firefighter, Randy Smith, were going to take part in the evening's parade. Suffering severe injuries, Smith, who serves as assistant Chief for the fire department, was transported to a Topeka hospital for treatment. Fire Chief Ed Kester said Thursday evening that Smith was making good progress in his recovery.

The wreck, which happened around 5:00 on U.S. Highway 75, just south of 174th Road, remains under investigation by the Kansas Highway Patrol.
