(KLZA)-- Work to hard surface the runway at Farington Field east of Auburn. Federal, state and city funds are being used to make the improvements. Monday night the Auburn City Council approved a proposal from the Nebraska Public Power District to help pay for extending and widening the runway enough for a King Air 200 to land at the airport.
  

NPPD owns and operates Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville and uses a King Air 200 to transport personnel, equipment and parts to perform work at the Cooper plant. Extending the runway at Auburn will mean NPPD can save travel time and expense and have an alternate airport to use at certain times.

Under the agreement, NPPD will provide $197,000 so the runway can be lengthened to 3,750 feet and be 35-foot wide. In addition, the money will help pay for GPS approaches.

The original project improvements were to cost $2.84-million.
